Troncones,

Three surfers were killed from shark attacks in a little more than a month in a relatively small area in Mexico.

A shark injured a 49-year-old American surfer Saturday, May 24, at Playa Linda in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. The attack is the third in one month in the area with a fatal attack on a Mexican surfer occurring a day earlier 20 minutes north near the beach resort area of Troncones. Adrian Ruiz, a surfer from San Francisco, was killed in an attack in April in Troncones. Authorities have not closed beaches in Zihuatanejo, but people were being advised against swimming.

If you wonder about the title then the change in the distribution of the sharks is probably the result of the cooler currents that get closer to the shores as a result of a phenomenon called La Nina, but  global warming was initailly thought to be the reason. You can read more at the Sufherenow and the 5Ones blogs.

One thing for sure I wouldn’t attempt to surf at Troncones, Mexico any day soon.

Global warming probably has had an influence, but scientists are now saying that the attacks in Mexico are likely due to the La Nina effect (opposite of El Nino) that brings cooler currents closer to the coast in the Pacific. Who knowns, but that area of Mexico is definitely off my radar for a while!

Thanks for the explanation, climate phenomenons have all sort of influences that we would have to learn more carefully, the recent project that you report sounds really interesting
