A cold sharp wind came over the wave and I just barely turned my head the wrong way. That was last week. It took four days before I had to admit the pain and lumpy neck was more than a passing earache. The doctor gave me a pile of antibiotics and stern words about not surfing for 2-3 weeks.

*2-3 Weeks*??!!!

OK ... I got my chin off the ground ... and ... am remembering you all who have survived (and are surviving) water-deprivation for even longer times (even harsher pains!) ... still, I am just on Day One ... (already snapped at surfer-collegue who asked about south swell today) ... sigh ...

On the positive side ... it is winter and there isn't a LOT happening on the south shore ... and ... I am just starting a new quarter at work and have some challenging classes to teach (HTML?! - LOL) ... AND ... hmmmmmm ... I have just started a *COOL* new creative, media-worthy project (something I have been thinking about for two years) ...

... watch for the announcements ...

Sus

I hope you feel better! I have a good friend who just got into a car accident with a cab and he has pierced his larynx, requiring surgery. Plus he is here (native Californian) and we are all bumming because ice shelves will put us out of surfing commission for maybe months.

I surely do hope you feel better! Gail and Tommy send their regards! What is your announcement...IT??

Sorry to hear you're out of the water. What actually happened? What do you have? a punctured eardrum? ear infection?

Time will pass quickly, you'll see, and you'll come back stronger than ever.

<<foon suggested some good out of water pastimes for Sus including:>>

<<Since 1982 the English Department at San Jose State University has sponsored the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, a whimsical literary competition that challenges entrants to compose the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels. >>

I went there for a semester, back when I was school hopping.

<<1. Photography - pull out the old camera and start shooting pics of everything. Surfing's good but tricky. Ask those pic-happy guys Bud and Neal for some advice. Invite yourself on one of their sessions on the pretense of taking their pictures. Make sure you get some embarassing ones worthy of a caption contest.>>

First and best...shot some fun video in dr perscribed dry days. A long lense really helps. Maybe you can borrow camera from school A/V dept.

I gotta agree with Foon here. The Hawaiian contingent (whole and ailing) could watch 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?' You'd more than likely be grateful to live in Hawaii after seeing that one. Infected ear? Ruptured Achilles tendon? You *could* live in West Texas. (shuddershuddershudder)

Get completely well soon!

I don't know....What comes to mind here is that saying about how you don't know what it's like to be on the tallest mountain until you've been in the lowest valley. Granted, 2-3 weeks out may not be much in comparison to some things other people have to cope with, but it's still a low. But, in being in that 'valley,' just think how much sweeter that first time back in the water is gonna feel...Stokus maximus.

I hope it goes by fast for ya though.

Bummer, bad news...maybe Neal can help get you through this spell. As a minor consolation, it's been 28 days since I last surfed (PR) and it'lll be another ~29 days until I touch the warm waters of Oahu. Neal may be water-approved by then so I forsee a water coming out party when I arrive .

I was down in Va Beach this past week

'May be' is a stretch, as I mentioned in my email, Rod. Hope I at least get the green light to just shoot in the surf.

I think that the physical therapy is going pretty well. But I can't jump or anything near that. Long way to go.

As for helping out Sus, there was a surfing art show at the Honolulu Academy of Arts last weekend. Maybe it's still going on. I might try and check it out myself. Otherwise, other options include: heavy alt.surfing posting, Borders and the library, and Punahou carnival!!!

sponge (2-3 weeks? Stop whining! )
