Surfing advice

I'm a very good skateboarder and I'm really interested in surfing. I'm planning on going to Hawaii this January to give it a go. Some friends were telling me that I should go somewhere first where the waves aren't as rad as Sunset Beach. I told him that it can't be that different from riding the half pipe at the skate park here in Des Moines.

Do you guys know of any competitions going on there in January?

you can make it up to the Minnesota State Fair this summer they have a Sunset Cow-tipping Session you may wanna check it out like that

Do you have info on that? Is it for newbies? Although I feel confident I wouldn't want to be up agaisnt a bunch of older guys who have been doing this for 30 years. It will be my first time, after all.

Half pipe in Des Moines is much more difficult than full Pipe on the North Shore. By the way, do you know how to swim? That's one differece from skateboarding. Oh, and the other thing as a test, run 1/4 mile as fast as you can to simulate a long hard paddle out. Then hold your breath for 45 seconds while continuing to run to simulate a double wave hold-down. While holding your breath, throw yourself on the concrete a couple times (head first would be the real test) to simulate hitting the reef. If you can handle that you can ride simulated waves.

Well as a matter of fact, you will be up against some older guys who have been doing this for years, but don't let that stop you. Historically, talented first timers who work hard have done well in the ASKOTY contest. Experience certainly helps, but with the right stuff, a relative newbie with an inspired act could mount a very serious campaign.

Dare to be great! Aim for the stars! You won't hit 'em if you set your sights low.
