Surf Rage book report

Being an Australian, I remember Nat Young being in the news. From reading as many articles as I could about it, it appeared the Nat deserved all the he got. He tried to throw his weight around, I think against an adolescent, and the father saw it and gave Nat Young a belting. However, if my memory serves me right, this happened in queensland. However stand-up surfers is Australia are becoming rather aggressive(from where I come from - victoria), especially in the last 2 years. It has come to the point that in 2000 (shortly after the Nat Young Scandal), that a major newspaper had an article, with quotes from a surfer Steve Harrison from the Queenscliff Boardriders Club. H e quoted bodyboarders as 'nancy boys - who just got in the way'. He even went to the extreme of promoting T-Shirts encouraging wave rage against bodyboarders. (Source: RUSH bodyboard mag No.7)

If people want surf rage to calm down a level or two, I think all wave-riders must accept differing forms of wave riding and maybe people with such attitudes, like Steve Harrison should have a good look around and see that their intimidatory remarks and actions are just going to increase surf rage and amonisity between the different styles of surfers.

This sounds like something I should know more about, perhaps I do already but just not by that title?? Can you elaborate on a few of the details, or will I have to buy the book? (or at least scan thru it at the shop)

Interestingly enough, in a recent Surfer Magazine article, it explains why Beau Young, Nat's son, just stood by while his Dad was being beaten to a pulp on the beach at Angourie.....Nat was way out of line. After mouthing off to his arch enemy in the water, the man's teenage son confronted Nat, and Nat apparently took the kid's arm and twisted it behind his back while taking a couple of shots to the kid's face. When the kid's Dad found out, he went beserk, and beat Nat like a red headed step child.....I mean, if it was your son, wouldn't you?

I've got to hand it to Beau Young, he seems like a cool guy, probably because he was raised by his mother and stepfather and NOT by Nat. I was glad when Beau won the World Longboarding Championships last year. Can you imagine the pressure of being Nat Young's son?
