Tom Tweed revealed someone's Nickname:

There are many in this distinguished club. We even have our own groupies.

I am very familiar with the the phenomena having observed it first hand.In fact during the years I used to surf cold water a friend of mine once labeled me 'Big Pink' after seeing me in this condition after pulling off my wetsuit. (He still calls me by this name, but is the only one)

What little I know of physiology, I believe as the skin is exposed to cold wind or windchill, the circulation system tries to compensate by driving more warm blood to the surface epidermis. Since our skin is almost translucent anyway, the color of the blood combine with the verywhite skin produces Voila!! PINK!

We also blush very easily and when you get us very mad there's no mistaking the red faced rage. With me that's about a three second warning before I go off.

We strawberry blondies know we are a rare and interesting species. It's too bad our skin is so ill-suited to outdoor sports. Blistering and burning are our burden to bare (ALLITERATION!!) for such earthly beauty.

-Foonskin (Like a foreskin, only pinker)

I was worried about ya, Tom. I'm ( we are )so happy to hear from you.

...snipped interesting story about Bill Andrews......

What is really amazing to me is the way

Slo-Mo, from my days as a cabanna boy in N. Miami. The heat was gruesome, so I moved real slo.

Thanks Tom!

Sorry to hear this, Tom; may the new year be filled with peace and new hopes. It is really good to see you are still with us here at a.s. Your posts are always special.

Deliciously funny story! Makes me wonder if the 'transluscent skinned one' also blushes as dramatically ...

Sus ... considering blush-testing techniques ...

Ah, Tom...this is also the year that you put up the boat site, no?

it all evens out, man.

It ain't 'pinkbod'....

My favorite was the guy we called Meatball, especially after he had his little confrontation with Heartburn, who we never really liked much anyhow...

There were also Manolete, Thug, Skid, Peanut, Dog, Stork, Raisin, Bwana, The Bear, Magoo, Kamikaze Wally, Hardhat (aka Lugnut), Toad, Fane (aka Bug), Mags, Benjie McMaui....gawd, there was a bunch of them and I know I'm just dusting off my memory here. Considering some of the names people got stuck with, I really can't object to

Your re-cap of history is, unfortunately, accurate, and your facts are in fact, facts!

(I just wish the PINK were really BIG)

What you failed to mention, is that all I wanted, was, to LOOK like a surfer!

Imagine, in the late 50's and early 60's, attending La Jolla High School, and NOT looking like Tweek, or Butch, or Joe Trotter.

They were the cool ones!

Not only was I a 'Shores Guy', but I had a Glencourt 9- phone number (all the WindanSea guys, the REAL surfers, had a Glencourt 4- phone number) AND, the worst of all: I had transparent skin!!

I don't know if it was the cumulative effects of Man-Tan and sunbathing, or just a birth defect, which led to my bout with:

MELANOMA! almost 20 years ago (level 5, stage II, 3-6 months life expectancy)!

(I laugh at death)

Your fire-ring story, about my brother is true, however, my most memorable fire-ring story is, once, 'not disclosing how many years ago', when I finally got a fire going, Wayne 'Rising Sun' Miyata peed on it, and extinguished the flame.

I swore I would get even with him, someday...

I finally ran into him a few years ago at a WindanSea party.

As I remembered, his ('can anyone explain nicknames such as Tubesteak' tube-steaking fire extinguisher was at least 3 feet long...(a little known factoid is, mothers had to hide their daughters when Tubesteak Tracy was around)

...Reality is that Wayne himself is barely 5 feet tall, and the rest of his body, I'm sure, is in proportion...way too easy, way too long ago!

Of course, I had to tell him the story, and at least fake a blow to his chops.

Anyway, TRUE friends like you, are very rare in anyone's world, especially in the world of La Jolla Surfing.

...a place where the institution's walls fell down and none of the inmates left...(Speaking only of myself, of course)

Black's is calling, and life only gets better!

Do you know Micheal Price, a shaper in Kitty Hawk? I surfed Barnes st. one day and a guy named 'Delbert' ( nickname maybe ) was surfing there. He was real vocal but friendly out in the water. He told me about Micheal Price, and I had a board shaped by him.

The Surffettes did a cute thing at the bridge. They made a sign that said 'Help!! We found out our parents are Aliens'!!! It helped ease the 3 hour wait.
