Whoa, how close to shore does that wave break? I'm always intrigued by pictures of fair sized waves breaking close to shore on a (looklikea) beachbreak, waves of that size would break very far from shore around here. Is there a reef or something?

It's reef, verrry shallow, especially the rights. When someone goes right, everyone looks. There were occasional sets that broke further out, but like the photos show, most were 30-75 feet from the shore.

The pics of that beachbreak can be rather deceiving, what's hard to tell is that the beach is practically a 45 degree angle and probably 10 feet above the waterline. Add to that, the tide was waaaay high and the surf was breaking *extra* close to shore. Can you say _backwash_? Most every wave was blasted sky high by it. That's why there was only one or two standups and about 15 bodyboarders. Looked real pretty, though.

I've seen the back wash become a breaking wave on the way out, spectacular impacts when it hits the incoming surf and bodyboarders flung high into the air.
