I've been sporadicly taking my paddleboard out this summer in order to prepare for a leisurely wharf (Santa Cruz) to wharf (Capitola) paddle this month. I haven't been going very far or paddling very far so I didn't expect to gain much strength. I figured I might gain a bit of stamina for the winter. So I have this fat 7' hybrid that I've taken out a few times but never been able to get into many waves. Well today there were no waves at Cowell's so I grabbed the 7' and headed elsewhere. It was a wonderful experience. I got quite a few two, three, or four foot waves in the slot. The first was on my knees but the rest were standing up. Apparently even the little bit of paddling I've done has improved my ability to catch waves. My pop ups were painfully slow. I recognize that doing some strength training will be necessary to speed up my pop up and will probably help me accelerate while trying to catch a wave. I'm happy!
