I'm looking through the August issue of National Geographic and I see a picture of a desolate left hand point break off the coast of Gabon, Africa with nice-looking lines coming in (page 101 upper right). But then I read the caption of the larger picture on the page, 'hippopotamuses venture into the surf to mate, play, .......' See supplemental photos at:
http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/programs/splat/cgi- bin/splat.pl?U...

A beautiful left point break with _nobody_ as far as the eye can see; just a few horny and very territorial hippos. Before paddling out, you gotta ask yourself: 'do I feel lucky?'

Mike

Note: the photos on the web page are only supplemental to the hard copy mag. The point break photo is not on the web page.

I was expecting you to come up with someting more like 'Horny hippos? Does that really differ much from some of the wildlife that crowd the Florida beaches during summer?'

Maybe swollen could teach them to surf?

I didn't know hippos hit the surf. Can you imagine a hippo on a longboard?

Hippos are bigger killers than sharks and crocs, I hear.

Have you seen the salties in north Oz? Those things are 20 feet long and make their own ramps for launching into the water. The only water hole you want to go into up there is one with NT Draught, green cans and XXXX. Of course, if you drink the XXXX you may want to go into the water hole.

There's no surf up there where New Guinea is only 100 mi. away so there's no need to chance it.

Amigo, you have patently never seen a tourist beach on Cape Cod in the summer. Not only do they venture into the surf to play and mate, some of the really obese ones wear swimsuits that are far too small (insert the smiley for 'projectile vomiting' here ) ......

Or, 'do I look attractive to a horny and territorial hippo' ....... which brings us to summertime parties or August weekend nights at the bars on Cape Cod. Think of Lycra stressed to just slightly below the point where it screams and saturated with sweat and rancid budweiser and you get the general idea. (remember that smiley for the massive technicolor yawn? Gimme one right here.)

And then they start dancing. Hooboy. The Lycra screams. You get a demonstration of seismic action, right out on the ol' dance floor. Aftershocks going on for about three beats before they shudder to a halt. Technically interesting, but aesthetically it leaves a lot to be desired - unless......

Whip down a few dozen warm budweisers and you start feeling kinda amorous yourself. Which is not a good move. Take my word for it. Not that I ever did any such thing, mind you.... not even during loooooong flat spells..........

Doc.......... ah huh, riiiight .................. so I got a few gnaw marks on my shoulder ..........

Then you wander onto the beach where the really obese ones don't wear any swimsuits at all....

Oh jeezus, now your getting too technical.

Are you saying the hippo drank Bud?

Well, now that you mention it.... In that same National Geo issue there is a photo of a.... umm... rather rotund woman wearing nothing but silver paint, hiking boots, and a sousaphone riding a unicycle across the Nevada desert blowing her horn (pages 6/7). It's from the Burning Man festival which, now that I think about it, was covered on the web page of an old alt.surfer (the physics grad student from UCSD; can't remember his name right now).
