Mother Ocean has again taught me a
Craig, Glad to hear you and your family had a great time. Nothing better than going back to Chicago with a tan/ sunburn in March, well except staying in Mexico. Did you find some property? How are the laws regarding a U.S. citizen living there full-time? Julie and I have been discussing this very possibility recently, except living on a boat.
A quick question, why can't you wear contacts? My buddy does, and just closes his eyes when duck diving or wiping out. He doesn't seem to loose that many.
You heading out for GP2K1?

Next time remember reef booties. I loved Chicala. That beautiful transparent water with the big blue fish swimming underneath my feet; plumeria blooming on the trees. And only 4 of us surfing. You're right..you head directly for the rocks and the shore, but it's possible on certain tides toride down the line and miss everything.
One of my alltime favorite places.

Glenda, Can you also see what I mean?? I was afraid of how close the wave was breaking to the rocks and because (I thought) the shoulder was not far enough away from my perspective because I think it needs to break a bit bigger for that. But I'll know better on my next trip as I fully expect to return to Chicala! tdsurf is far more experienced than I.
We had limited time as I was flying off in only hours. And I had seen the wave only from the back, we hadn't landed on the beach.
Please enlighten this elderly kook who isn't afraid to admit that he's learned about surfing in only four years and done so mostly on trips away from his home, what is a reef bootie that does not come off with the force of a wave? Something different than a bootie for temps reasons??
Thanks! craig

Reef booties protect your feet from sharp stuff in the water..reefs, sea urchins. The reef booties I have are split-toe O'neill's. They come up just to the ankle. They fit pretty snugly and they have a velco strap across the top of the foot so they won't fall or wash off.
I've worn them in Mexico and Maui (around the breakwater near Lahaina) and I wear them here (SF Bay area) in the summer and fall, mostly for some protection. Not really warmth.
I took a boat from Sayulita to Chicala.. The boat pulled into the cove and the boatman put my board in the water. I followed the board over the side of the boat, hopped on and paddled out.
I was with some people that lived in the area and some visitors who had surfed their many times before, so they clued me in on the break. You look like you're heading straight for the rocks and I do remember kind of surfing between them.
Your trip brought back some very nice memories. Sayulita isn't that far from here..mmm...now you've got me thinking.
