special sneak preview for the fine folks at alt.surfing
http://www-scf.usc.edu/~jborrero/peru/quinta_a.jpg

La Quinta near Camana, remains of a 2 story house. there was a foundation in front of this house of (presumably) another house, but it was wiped clean. There was seaweed and sand on top of the 2nd story. 4.5 m above ground. that's me in the red shirt. We are about 100 m inland on low lying farm land. the wave penetrated over 1 km inland here.

the La Punta area on the coast outside of Camana, the hardest hit area. the whole place was previously pretty much covered with structures before the event. mostly light concrete, wood and adobe construction. the wave went all the way to the base of the mountain in the distance. note the skeletonized structure in the middle with the walls blown out on both sides. The pic was taken off the 2nd floor of a solid building that was on the front line. It had sand and debris all over the 2nd floor and up a few stairs foing to a 3rd floor lookout!

don't mess with mother nature...

<slice>

I guess not....whooeeee.

Jose, stupid question: is that Camana in Arequipa province?

Pulled up a map or two and from the looks of it it's at the head of a bay. Kind of an effect like that in Alaska a couple-three decades ago, bays concentrating the surge at the head?

yes, Camana is the summer vacation spot for a lot of folks from Arequipa.

hmmm, not sure what you mean, but i think not really.

are you referring to lituya bay event in 1958 or the 1964 prince william sound event?
http://www.usc.edu/dept/tsunamis/alaska/

this peru event was a very classic subduction zone earthquake and tsunami. the latest seismological evidence is showing that the greatest amount of seismic uplift was right offshore of the camana area. camana itself is a big diffuse sort of point, more like a bend in the coast. all sand. there are flat river flood plains from the beach berm at the shore several km inland to the mountain. away from the center of the valley the mountains get closer to the sea and the beach width drops to a few hundred meters. this whole area was hit pretty hard.

If you think that Peru looks messy I think you better look closer to home when you consider this article:
