My First time surfing the Oregon Cost was a warm experience. I was visiting family in Portland on Sat, but Sun was mine no kids or nothing just me. Woke around 8:00 Nice Little 1 1/2 drive to the coast.

Short little walk to the beach threw the forest past all the camping spots, and over the bridge. The camp sights had families and mostly young surfers with tents and surfboards everywhere. Its the most popular summer surfing spot in Oregon i think?

Upon reaching the beach there where 8 to 10 people in the water. The waves where gentle and about waist high. I have this strange thing about the first wave it seams to always be my best ride. Maybe im just out of shape ?

How were the water temps? Would a 3/2 work?

with a 3/2 you could get pretty chilled. A 4/3 would be a good choice for the average person.....unless you're superhuman like me. Our water is especially cold this summer. Which is actually a good thing...........cold water makes the salmon happy. This year has really been a good year for salmon so far.....I hope it stays cold all summer

Last summer, we were fishing in Coos and Winchester. I was told that the water at Winchester was too cold, even for the salmon. I believe it was around 43, in August.

good waves too, with nobody out

shhhhhhhhh........

actually, the sharks at Winchester keep the crowds down (not alot of people like to surf there......but it's an awesome barrel). I've been told it's in the top 5 of spots on the west coast for the highest concentration of Great Whites <Salmon = Sea Lions = Sharks>. It's the mouth of the Umpqua River. The Umpqua is legendary for fishing (A few different species of Salmon, Steelhead (winter and summer run), Trout, Smallmouth Bass, and I recently found out that there are Striped Bass also). I personally know 4 people that have had 'encounters' there in the last 6 years.....and I've personally had many spooky days there myself. But I'd never pass it up if I was in the neighborhood. It's actually a really cool place just to hang out. Lots to do.

Nope......but I can't wait till the silvers make their way into the sound (I hear they're coming through the San Juans right now). That means I can flyfish for them from the beach........and that always makes things interesting.

I'm a transplanted Oregonian (ended up getting a job in Maryland after I finished a stint in the service) so I'm with ya on the water being cold. But I haven't jumped in Oregon waters since I was in college, so I wondered how well modern wetsuits would work. My RipCurl elasto was pretty comfortable in 55-ish water last fall.

I broke out a 3/2 this month for Washington and plan on taking it to Oregon when I bolt in a couple of weeks. Sessions go about 2.5 hours before I get out for a breather. In a 4/3, I could pro'lly stay in another hour.

I've been hammering them........unreal. They really have made a good comeback. You just gotta know where to look. You really need to pick up a flyrod. A good 6 weight.......and I'll tie you up some of my baitfish patterns.

in fact.......I'm headed out right now.......super low tide this morning
