Time: Sat Dawn to about 9:00 Weather: Sunny w/ very light offshore Waves: Waist to chest occasional almost head high
Despite a nasty cold, low fever, and all kinds of green stuff being coughed up, I headed for the beach with a friend and some boards around 4:30 am Saturday morning. A fun swell greeted us after a quick hour's drive to my 'local' spot. Having not surfed much this year it took me a little while to get back in my groove.
The middle hour of the surf session kept me going all weekend. Several head high waves, which I took off on later than ever( for me), had me 'racing' down the line along a beautiful wall of water. Well maybe it wasn't really racing but for my meager skills it seemed pretty quick. I got to the nose and back and almost ten toes over as well. Another real accomplishment for me. This longboard thing really is a blast, but I have to say I can't wait to try to master a shorter board as well. For some reason that part is taking me a while. There was a guy out on a short board that rode with great style and tremendous energy. I need to learn that.
There was the usual right of way bullshit once the line up started getting crowded. I always let a few go after a good ride but some other guys on longboards just paddle and stroke for every wave regardless of whose deeper. Never even mind about letting a few go for the guy(s) on a shortboard who were sitting shallower than us.
Oh well it was a great session and it stayed with me all weekend. Even when I was cleaning out my gutters in brutal midday sun I kept flashing back to some of the better waves of the day.
The more I surf................The more I want to surf.
