Hello. Any suggestions on size and shape for a beginner board? Maybe one that I can learn on and still be able to use after progressing a little? I am 165lbs and 5'8' and will be riding on the East Coast for the time being. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Go to the local surfshop and ask them. Unless they are total dorks they will hook you up with an OK board.

A funboard/minimal/hybrid or a longboard will get you going really fast, catching waves and standing up for more then a splitsecond the first day.
