I examined this macker closely and given its apparent size, deduced it is more like 3.1416 ft.

1. I wonder why 'big' Lake waves are always so gently sloped?

2. This is an example of the size isn't everything. A big mushy wave just ain't all that mean IMHO.

However, currently I would take a portion of that size for some riding.

Hi Rod and Dan, Rod, to be very precise, if you boil it down to the exact precision, I believe the wave would come to exactly: 3.1415926535897932384626433832795....... Ft. After all, shoaling does have this effect, and it is more elegant to express this as: max(L Mich Wave Height in feet) = pi(height in feet) Thank God I took high school calculus. I can only hope and pray for such waves here. Or anywhere. Ralph Schmidt would be proud (HS teacher)

Dan, I am thinking of a quick weekend in SoCal coming up. Rod mentioned he may return in June...I'd be interested in a little trip. My surfboards are getting dusty. Going for paddles on a flat Lake isn't much fun. My friends are trying to talk me into learning windsurfing. I'd rather surf the old fashioned way. Skateboarding the alley behind Kedzie Avenue and avoiding the broken glass just isn't the same as riding waves.

I'd like to ask you about some computer stuff offline. I'll email. Craig

Find a skate park with some 8 ft bowls.

Yeah, a new skate park with 8 ft bowls was just completed north of 46th St on the South Side in Chicago. Since I will be doing more grad work at the U of Chi down there starting June, I will check it out after class.

The best skating for me was in Central Park in NYC over the Great Hill. Interesting scenery, smooth pavement. I am not into short bust out moves like kickflips, grinds and all that, I like long but fast rides and old fashioned stuff like tailgrab and Indys. I also like longboarding(surfing) a lot and prefer this to skateboarding, though.

Hey I'm just an old fart. But I'm an old fart training for marathons and triathlons who likes to have fun. craig PS See 'Surfing for Life', it's never 'too late'. I know 15 year olds who think 20 is near death.

My son and I will fly into San Diego on Wed, June 27th and leave on Friday, July 6th early AM. He has tournament baseball on 6/29-7/3 and probably a scrimmage game on 6/28, schedules TBD. The team will probably be staying in the Hotel Circle area near Mission Valley. There's a possibility of staying with Terry Hendricks up in Encinitas the last couple of days or we could share a place down in La Jolla. Unless somebody else has plenty of room (and power!).

Hey, Craig, I skateboarded there when I was a kid. On a skateboard with wheels that seemed uniquely designed for coming to an abrupt stop when encountering tiny pebbles. My brother and I preferred the marble plaza of the Lever Brothers building on Park Ave. My Dad gave me that skateboard after we saw 'The Endless Summer.'

I hear ya. That's why I got myself a real skateboard longboard with big wheels. Those little limestone pebbles are terrible...and not fun to fall down on, either! With the bigger wheels you can make it.

Other fun places in the vicinity included the GM building plaza at 59th. The only thing was that you had to go real late at night or the cops would kick you out.

NYC is a fun place to be. Lots of skating opportunities and even a few real live surf breaks like Rockway or Long Beach. Trains galore (I am a transit freak), great restuarants, I'm hooked. In the rest of the country, only Chicago approaches it in terms of city life... and the surf is FAR better in NYC than Chi. I enjoyed every minute there and look forward to returning soon.
