Just got a message about some XXL big wave thing going on over at Swell.com. (I know, I know its been going on a while but I don't go there that much)

So I go and decide to check it out. On the XXL contest page it has three pictures. Two at mavs and Lard H. at jaws. But it does not say he is at jaws. It says he is at Mavs.

Laird Hamilton Maverick's December 25, 2000

That is what it says but the picture is not at Mavs and he is skinning it. Maybe they will change it by the time AS'ers read this. Maybe not. I just think it is kinda funny.

Laird hasn't been to Mavs, or at least I've never heard of him coming.

Big day at Mavs was the 22nd, not the 25th.

The page has been corrected.

I think Flea has Laird beat, but only by a little.

If you see this photo (cut and paste the 2 lines) http://www.mavsurfer.com/mavsurfer_00/editorial/ image_photo/ mavericks_12_22_00/images/flea_seq1.jpg

I think you will find the Mavs wave is larger. But the Laird shot has Laird in front of a still open face, while the shot of Flea shows the wave after it breask a little more.

Ahhh.

I was looking at
http://www.swell.com/sw/content/mag/pulse/ 01_06_xxl_debate.jsp which identifies the wave as Jaws. The color of the water is a dead giveaway that it is not Hawaii. We have upwellings in NorCal that fill the water with nitrogen and make it live. The blue water of Hawaii is comparably dead for wildlife.

I don't think you can make your case that easily. Hawaii's water is cleaner, and it has coral reefs, which make the surrounding water teem with critters.

A rich ocean environment requires sunlight and nitrogen be present in the same general area. When that occurs, algae can live, and they form the lowest level of the food chain.

Upwellings prominent in Northern California bring nitrogen to the surface. The algae that live here make the waters green. They also make it an incredibly rich environment for sea life.

I am not saying that Hawaiian waters are not rich in wildlife. But we got a lot more algae than they do, and that makes our waters green.

It is also my impression that wildlife in Mexico in the tropics is much more diverse and richer than it is in Hawaii - but I can't claim to have made a study of it.

The air in Southern California is better for most people than others would believe. It contains 12 essential minerals, that arent normally found in rarified Country Air. ...and is more healthy for you than Wonder Bread.

Neither can I HOWEVER, I *did* make one observation while surfing all the East Cape breaks of Cabo San Lucas...

Before I even went I already had been aware about the incredibly active oceanlife and fishing quality off Cabo in the Pac and *especially* going into the Sea of Cortez. I was aware cause I've always been interested in fishing and I already knew of the insane big game fishing going on down there. WELLL, let me just tell you, out of all the places I've ever been, I've NEVER seen anything like the life going in in the water down there! It literally seemed like the water around me when I was surfing was just ALIVE! I've never seen SO many fish of so many different types. Also saw seals or sea lions or whatever they were, giant sea turtles, flying fish, manta rays, everything. When you stuck your head underwater you could see schools of fish of every color, size and shape. Actually, I think I may have even seen a couple mermaids. <G>

Guess that mosquito-infested, algae-filled canefield ditch is where I should be.

You just said that in your previous post (above): 'The blue water of Hawaii is comparably dead for wildlife.'

Because there's more diverse and richer wildlife in Mexico, does that mean that Hawaii is dead for wildlife?
