I thought I'd seen everything at Cardiff Reef until this morning! A guy had an old longboard he was experimenting with... Carved it up, reglassed/resined with 2 motorcycle batteries under the deck with a charging plug near the nose and a button to activate a small motor (also under the deck). He scooped two areas on the bottom of the board where he installed two small propellers that were housed in a plastic tube in front of the fin. Yep friends, it worked about the speed of a slow paddle!

A few of the local guys who paddle out to the kelp beds on small summer days to fish were stoked... you have to understand thay have old longboards with crates and pvc pipes rigged on their fishing boards and spend several hours a day going after the sea bass, etc., in the beds.

Don't think it'll work in the line up

Sound perfect, motors and propeller, for conditions with bad reforms wave losing reforms and peaky conditions when you need to get from section to sections.

Personally, I thought a rope tow like at Alpine ski resorts might be good for the extremely long surf sessions.

There used to be a guy in the late fifties who'd paddle out at Little Dume on what was even then considered a L O N G board and sit way outside the surf line for hours and hours at a time. He wore a big straw hat and a t-shirt and there was always a wooden box balanced in front of him as he knee paddled out. One day during a long lull I paddled out towards where he was sitting and he beckoned me over. We shot the shit for a few minutes and then he explained that he paddled out each day so he could to get away from his wife. He packed the box with a few sandwiches, a couple of beers, a few cigars and a transistor radio so he could enjoy a few hours of relative peace. He's probably long gone by now, but I bet he'd like one of these new fangeled electric surfboards - especially if it had a tiny fridge and a television attached. B

Look, there is no way that would ever work. You are just having a hallucination. I am fishing out there. That thing that looks like a TV is just flashlight in a box that I keep lit in case it suddenly clouds over and I have to signal to a boat so it doesn't run me over or something. I don't need you spreading rumors. Get away from my gear. Okay, here's $20. If you see the wife, I was fishing. Got it?!

For small fall surf with long waits between sets, I have seriously suggested that we bring out a longboard with a small anchor. On the board would be a tv for watching the Bears game and a grill for hot dogs. This stuff is possible with only three foot waves and three people out.

Dude, where are you that there are only three people out? I bet nowhere in Cali... (duh, I guess if you're watching the Bears then you aren't in Cali)

When he figures out a way to heat the deck (but not melt the wax) for mid-winter surfing, let me know.
