Yesterday there was a guy in a shirt and tie and nice shoes changing to go surf at the same time as me. Also, after I got out, there was a different guy in a shirt and tie changing, and this guy talked on his phone the whole time, and then walked around in his wetsuit on the phone for a while.

The whole thing was really disturbing.

WHOH db-DUDE!

Like, I was pulling out of my neighborhood and at the stop sign waiting to come in there were three cars. In each one of the three cars the driver was talking on the phone. So strange driving by the row of yakking drivers! *S-U-R-R-E-A

Dress code is everything isn't it. (Stessing the ideology of the individual in closed minded statements) Not. You are muting your own point. You know. The phone thing is a little over the edge though admittedly. Culture dictates the tools, and the tools dictate the activity, but the divergence from socially accepted activity to follow ones own beliefs and intuitions is the face of a true individual. Hence you should welcome such a person into your tiny cultural nitche. I had the same experience mountain biking in remote Utah in 1994. Learned a lot since then. Such as the fact that people are only people. You should be stoked that some guy in a tie and on a cell phone wants to surf with you. You do what you have to do to get where you are happy even for the tiniest moment. Think of where you will be in 10 years. Waves are for enjoying. The ride is for the person. Enjoyment is the key to life. Give this ultra teenage angst thing a rest and let everyone enjoy the water without being judged on stupid concepts such as dress code or where they come from. There are more than enough waves to go around. Right?

Yeah, what he said. I hate it when people laugh while I'm changing out of my tutu.

Uhhhh... Why?

It's hardly ultra-teenage angst. I just said it was weird to have suits coming out, and to see somebody on the phone in a wetsuit. I'm much, much milder about newbies than most are.

I'll bet it's moreso in Oregon where you are, than here in Santa Cruz.

Here's a thought, though. What if waterproof phones come out? Will people be doing business in the lineup? Talking while riding? Just you wait...

Heck, years ago they were shooting moons while riding. Now they're shooting photographs. Progress...

Yeah, in the general scheme of things - a good portion of this group (judging by the straw poll survey done a few months ago) are in some way connected to the dot com world (or at least the dot edu one )

Like Manj says, at least the guy is getting in the water, and you don't know what he was saying on the phone:

1) Dell stocks are down - sell sell sell 2) can you hook me up with the usual bag for the weekend? 3) yes honey I'll be home soon and I'll pick up some diapers on the way 4) yep - just got here, its head high and glassy, meet you out in a few mins. 5) 5ccs of dia-norephrine*, I'll be in O.R. In about half an hour.. Keep the patient stable til I get there. 6....????

Any others

This is a unique place. It brings together a real small, targeted segment of the overall surfer population. Lets look at the numbers, 17 mil worldwide (surfers) 2 mil domestic, couple hunderd at most in here (alt.surfing). 15-30 who participate regulary.

It is cool to see so many people who are in touch with their cyber-selves. Surfers can actually be techo-literate. Nerds can be ho-dads. And yes there is a place for gadgetry (not OPC's type) in the lineup.

Here are a few old scans for those with the bandwidth. Part of a project coming up, but you may like the arrangement.
