It seems that the the recent shark 'attacks' have brought out many of the eco folks and propelled them to stand upon the soap box and speak out against divers feeding sharks. They seem to think that this is the root cause for the so called 'attacks' on humans. Or at least it (feeding the sharks)has become a political pawn inorder to express their views. Its sort of interesting that nobody seems to think that over protecting a certain species may lead to over population and increased demand for food. Which may lead to more visability in our waters. Hummmm. Does anybody remeber when the deer season was shortened so much in New Jersy that the deer over populated and were everywhere? There were deer picking through your trash, garden, and anywhere edibles could be found. Remember how many folks were killed due to deer sprinting across roads in urban areas and getting hit by cars? I wonder why the media did not report those as deer attacks?

After all, it was just another animal coliding with a human in the search for food!

Shark hunting is ok by me... just don't chum for them near where I'm surfing.

Recent ipisodes makes one pause at the thought of paddling across the channel to Assategue in OC/Md.

Several years ago, Labor Day, we had a guy trying to spearfish beneath the reef lineup at Secos. He tagged a garibaldi and that was it, a couple of guys pulled him to the surface and sent him in. He called one of them to the beach to sort things out, but when the surfer got there the spearfisher apparently reassessed his chances and found them wanting. So he practically held his wife in front of the surfer as a shield... repeating over and over 'stay away from my wife, I'll call the cops...'

Funny you mentioned it, we were talking about that incident in the lineup on Saturday as a possible example of 'surf rage.' I'm still fond of the guy who dropped in on a local, got pushed, freaked out, paddled in, and then paddled back out with a 3' long cudgel of driftwood. Unfortunately for him the local was adept at climbing onto the big rock and wielding a surfboard...
