Watching the shuttle lift of on the box tonight , Got me thinking about what looks like beach breaks close to the launch site. Whats the story is this surfable or a total exclusion zone? In 1990 I had a look around the site, and the viewing point was close to the beach, small but looked to have potential. Tom....

Playlinda- is the break on the Canaveral Seashore just north of the restricted area. I haven't been there in years myself. Looking at a nautical chart, there's several shallow shoals around the point where the launch pads are, which might hurt the surf potential. The water is deeper further south.
South of the Cape is an inlet with lots of Cruiseship traffic, and everything south is public access. The very southern part is too sheltered for most swells- a place to go on the few days when everything else is closed out. The Cocoa Pier is about two miles south of the inlet, which is where the fun begins.
Last time I was there a few weeks ago, beach replinishment dredging strectched down Cocoa Beach to Patrick's Airforce Base.

playa linda does break, its a steep beach similar to spanish house (which of course is known more for its burritos than for its barrels)
palya linda is a long drive from cocoa beach, and in the past only accessible in periods well between launches. mind you, this beach is the northeast facing shore of the cape, it picks up swell easily. the very tip of cape camaveral has been totally off limits (thje restricted area) for most of surf history, but friends in the area have talked about being allowed out there in recent years to fish and surf both. these guys did work for nasa, but i dont know if that was a prerequisite to get access there. i do remember seeing long, empty peeling lefts at the tip thru the binoculars on several occassions, drooling miserably as we steamed out of port canaveral on a swordfishing trip......
