hey all a few months ago i picked up a board 6 foot 4' long. I haven't surfed much before, and i had a lot of trouble getting started. Yep, you guessed it, i'm almost as tall as my board and weigh heaps more.
what sort of board would you reccomend for a learner who wants to get into it? and what sorta wave surfing would be reccommended (i'd like to avoid surfing on broken waves with long boards after i get better). any help appreciated

Matt,
You should either pick up a funboard (in the 8 ft. range) or a longboard to get down all of the basics and get your groove on.
I started on a 6'4' when I was a teen and never grabbed the flow. Didn't surf for awhile and then picked up a 7'10' funboard years later.
My surfing has been exponential and I have worked my way back down to a 7'0' thruster. (Although I just started longboarding as well and I really jam well with it)
Go big, then when you feel like you can do more than the board allows you to do, downsize to your performance level.
Just a thought.........keep on rippin
