Montauk

It is kind of bizarre story actually but the Montauk Point State Park has been a focus of a legal and local fight between surfers and surfcasters.

The surfcasters have sole access to the shore that the local surfers call the north bar but as it usually happens when there is a beach that is really great for surfing no rules could keep the surfers away.

The Montauk Eight is the name that the eight surfers that were judged for swimming in the beach gave themselves and they actually won the case when the judge decided that the ban doesn’t apply to surfing.

If you are not living next to one of the declared surfing beaches I know the situation of trying to get the right to surf in beaches that are used for other purposes is not exactly a new experience neither what followed after the trial.

The park continues to ban surfing probably for no better reason than the prerogatives of the surfcasters association but I feel we haven’t heard the last word from the Montauk Eight.
