I went to Maui in December, but brought no board with, so I ran around trying to rent one. I was trying to get one on XMas day, so the Local Motion shop (which was the best place to rent a real glass&foam board) was closed, and nobody else had much of anything available. I ended up with one of those hollow plastic Bic longboards. You know what? It actually rode OK! It sure turned a lot better than I expected it to, and it paddled and caught waves reasonably well. Plus, I could bash it into whatever I wanted to (drove 5 miles with the trunk lid going BAM! BAM! BAM! on the deck every day...) cuz it's plastic! Sure beat flying with a longboard to Mexico - an experience I will NEVER repeat.

Funny you should mention this, a while go I volunteered to help Surfrider get these sort of benefits in place. Surfrider would love to be able to provide this as a benefit of membership.

I am willing take this up again if some of you out there are willing to help

I spent a couple months in South Africa a few years ago and

had some custom boards made for me by Spider Murphy or Safari Surfboards

to take to Indo. BTW- he makes the BEST boards I ever rode on!

So anyways I got three boards in this board bag and they actually *weighed* the

surfboard bag and wanted to charge me something like $1200 for overweight baggage!

So I start making nice with the lady and she did something called load sharing which

worked like this. She had me find people in the line who had little or no luggage and ask

them if I could take their unused weight. STG it astualy worked and I got off paying

nothing at all. Now when I left Indo I left all my boards with a friend of mine to use

whenever I got back.

Now most a my friends who go to Bali take no boards at all and buy them there

at the surf shop.

.

I'll keep that in mind!

They ask to help, I'll ask what they can do at the counter.
